New project in Puerto Galera., Philippines
Mrs. Axalan who is a senior citizen in Puerto Galera is in cooperation with Afro-Asia Educare starting up a brand new project which will benefit single mothers and the local native (Mangyan) woman in the community. Mrs. Axalan is providing housing facilities for the project as well as electricity.

The project is that these individuals will be able to take up classes in sewing clothes on second hand sewing machines provided by sponsors in Denmark and transported to Puerto Galera by Afro-Asia Educare. These classes in order for these women to provide clothes for them selves and their children or even start up small business sewing for others in the future.

Mrs. Axalan is a very active old woman, 77 years old, and she’s the President of the Senior Citizens Club in Puerto Galera district. She’s administrating her job from her office in the Municipal Hall.

Just a suggestion, why not prioritize projects with importance to hospitality and/or customer service business ang english teaching class since our town relies mostly in tourism industry?
(Naku, paubos na ang inglis ko! :D )

Hi tagavictoria. :)

You got a point, but we as an NGO are not involved in any kind of business. However I can personally contribute in that matter since I'm educated in Sales and Marketing as well as Public Relations and I have a lot of sucjestions how to uplift the service level in this area. If there's a kind of business association in Puerto Galera I would love to give a seminar on the matter.

When that's said I'll have to say that as an NGO providing for the education of the poorest we can only advice and not actively support the tourist industry here.

Don't worry about your English. My English also stinks

Tagavictoria,

Tagabundok, one of our active forum members is also advocating for adult education in English Language for Puerto Galera. I guess you can also coordinate with him and see how things can be developed and applied in the future. ;)

Magandang tandem, isang tagabundok, isa tagavictoria. he.he. :) (joke!)

ginoong tagabasta este rasta (joke din ;-))...pine-prepare ko nga itong postion paper na sinaggest na gawin ko ni kabanalan. actually naging spin-off lang ang English language class...oops pala---for the benefit of our other forumers who would rather read in English---okay, my soon-to-be written position paper actually will root for a continuing adult education program with English classes as one of the main subjects. I have observed that a lot of Puerto Galerans need a lot of other academic tools---from Math to Science etc. What I can foresee for now should be a customized educational module that will make local Puerto Galerans everywhere feel welcome to join and share their know-how even. When I say English or anything else for that matter---this is English to communicate with, know-how to add to improve one's life, etc. Nothing fancy or university-type of subjects. And each barangay has to be empowered to be a hub of its own human development. There only has to be a creative initiator or initiators for each area. If the barangay captain won't fit the picture then let it be a councelor or a civic leader who will be acceptable to the whole community. I can see that the hurdles to be seen are petty wars between this and that---my family against this family and so forth and so on (for whatever issue they can think of) but that a core group start first in helping each other better themselves. Then either the crab mentality will set in OR everyone decides to join and study! It is always a risk and a gamble...but hey! we should start somewhere!! I believe that it is time to go for this. God works in mysterious ways so nothing is by accident. First, it came with your friend's dilemma, bastarasta...then somehow, from Above it was whispered to me and some other forum-er that English should be offered as subject not just in schools but for everyone working in Puerto Galera. Yes, the pervading attitude is that whoever (young people we know told us this) tries to speak English is branded as snooty or trying hard to be of the "rich". However that came into these people's heads is a mystery but nevertheless smacks of plain stupidity/selfishness or wanting no one to be "better" than them. "Let's all stay together in our backward-ness and ignorance" seems to be the general attitude where I live. So, the only way we counter that is by talking to these bright children about going for it---study hard and speak English to us!

Yes, bastarasta, Mr Stellander, lighthouse, tagavictoria, kabanalan, netmagus (and all other forum-ers)---I have an idea and I am in the process of organizing my thoughts. This is all I can offer in all honesty because I have really other things to get active on in my small part of Puerto Galera here. I am just happy to be part of this forum and once i get my position paper out, I hope a good number of people give it some thought, improve on it and put it into action for the good of all our fellowmen who are just waiting for another opportunity to learn more.

God bless US ALL!

Thanks, mr Stellander! I am a person who believes in the One-ness of things and which is why I know that with even a change of attitude by just one person in a community will create an impetus for a positive evolution of the whole group of people. You know the "hundred monkey effect?" I know it only quite vaguely but that in Japan, a group of scientists began to study a certain species of monkeys. These monkeys eat a certain root crop and just like that---dig it then eat it. It was observed that this habit went on for years and years among that species of monkeys. Then one day,one small monkey thought of washing his own small root crop before eating it. His brother saw that it was good and thus thought of washing his own root crop. Then the parents saw what their children were doing and started washing their own food crops. And so it went on among the rest of the monkeys and soon everyone started washing their own root crops.

This is what I am now hoping to observe in Puerto Galera that something positive will eventually turn out. Narrow-mindedness, bigotry, clannishness, envy, crab-mentality, etc will be transmuted to expansion of Being-ness and Love for their fellowmen in so many ways! And all it takes for a small group to start it all---wash that root crop of the grime of indifference, envy, fear and apathy! Thanks to this forum that I am given a lot of food for thought!

Will write you an email because with this idea of continuing adult education, people have been writing me via the Internet (not of his forum) and offering so many assistance that it boggles my mind! The synchronicity is unbelievable!

There were many times in the past when I 'd wont to give up on Puerto Galera. Just let things go on and to just be like most of the people here - to be passive, indifferent.

But having people like you sparks that glimmer of hope that things could change. This Forum is for people who want to be different, those that think, those that care and for those who act.

There is hope for Puerto Galera.
