For the Fish and the Corals

It was a perfect day to snorkel. But we did not go there just to see the fishes at coral garden. We went to witness the installation of moorings to be used by the bancas which bring in tourist to snorkel in coral garden.

Danny Enriquez, former chair of the SB Environmental Committee, wrote a letter to Mayor Dolor and other concerned citizens about the continued destruction of the corals from indiscriminate dropping of anchors by the bancas. Mrs. Locsin responded by donating 3 cement mooring blocks with steel cables and buoys worth 56,000 pesos. The Locsin family has been, always been at the forefront of environmental conservation in Puerto Galera.

Today, May 16, was that day when we see the moorings installed at coral garden to protect the fishes and the corals which continue to draw hundreds of eager visitors to experience the unique underwater world of Puerto Galera.

With us was Erning, president of the bancas association, who together with other boatmen generously gave us a ride and a snorkeling tour. The boatmen agreed to use the moorings instead of dropping anchors; they too want to protect their source of livelihood.

Erning said that they need 2 additional moorings to cover the entire coral garden. Danny said we need to solicit money to fund this project. It would cost around 38,000 pesos to pay for 2 more moorings.

So we now ask anyone with a generous heart who loves the environment to kindly donate for the 2 moorings so that the entire coral garden will be protected from destruction.
